Capsized kayakers rescued near Waterville bridge

Posted: Updated:

Emergency crews pulled three kayakers from the Maumee River Wednesday afternoon after their kayaks capsized. Then one of the rescue boats overturned while trying to get to the victims. It happened in the Maumee River near the Waterville Bridge.

The three kayakers are okay, as well as the three emergency responders. No one needed to be transported to the hospital.

The fire chief says three people in their 30s were in two kayaks in the Maumee River, when the kayaks overturned.  We're told all three people were wearing life vests. They floated with the current and eventually made it to shore on Granger Island which is across from Waterworks Park in Waterville.

During the rescue, a Waterville rescue boat capsized, and the three people on board were rescued by a crew on a Monclova Township rescue boat.

The fire chief says all boaters should be careful.

"Don't go out by yourself. Go out with partners and know the water that you're traveling," says Chief Patrick Wambo. "It's dangerous out there."
