More new hires coming on line at Toledo Jeep

Posted: Updated:

In the last five years nearly 2,000 full time people have been hired at the Toledo Assembly Complex. Chrysler is now in the process of bringing on nearly 1,000 part time workers. Those part time workers will help give the full time employees a break from overtime.

A lot of the overtime is on the Wrangler lines as the SUV continues to shatter records. Last month, the Toledo built Jeep broke its all time March sales record. Of course it's an ongoing challenge to find ways to build more of the iconic vehicles. Chuck Padden is the Toledo Assembly Complex Manager,"We've actually done some things in just the last week to squeeze a few more Wranglers off the lines every day. We're expecting that number to go up even more in the next few months."

One of the things that's helping make that happen is the hiring of about 1,000 temporary, part time workers. So far about 300 of them are on the job with 100 more being brought on weekly until they hit the final number. The part time workers help backfill full time positions. Many full time workers are on the job 60 hours a week, under this new plan they can now choose if they want to work 40, 50 or 60 hours a week, "What this does for us as a company is that we can keep the lines running every Saturday. So with this program we get more volume and people get the time off tailored to their individual needs." In just a matter of months more than 100 of the part time workers have been hired full time,"We've hired about 160 of the part time workers full time since the beginning of the year."

Chrysler leaders say the company's long term partnership with the city is part of this hiring process. The majority of the full and part time workers at the plant are from the Toledo area, "Over 2/3 of the people being hired are from the Toledo area. We also reached out to The University of Toledo to expand our salaried hiring process as well. We are working with UT to recruit engineering talent to keep building on the relationship we have here in Toledo."

Chrysler leaders already have a bank of applications they're hiring the part time workers from so there are no openings at the plant as of right now, but you should keep checking the Chrysler careers website. The Toledo Assembly Complex is on track to build half a million Cherokees and Wranglers this year which will make it one of the biggest, if not the biggest, assembly plant in America.
