Rare exhibit takes flight in Toledo

Posted: Updated:

In a matter of weeks people from all over the world will flock to Northwest Ohio to see hundreds of migratory birds making their way through our region. There's an exhibit aimed at getting some of the "birders" to make the trip to our world famous Toledo Museum of Art.

The exhibition celebrates the annual bird migration along the southern shore of Lake Erie. It features more than 20 works by the artist considered to be the greatest living master of Venetian glass technology. Toledo is the only place you can see these creations together.

These glass birds are the creation of Lino Tagliapietra, "He's the absolute master of Venetian glass blowing techniques. This year he celebrates his 80th birthday and considering that he started working with glass when he was just 11 years old he is looking at a very long and distinguished career."

Jutta-Annette Page is the curator of decorative arts and glass at the museum. She says he has a distinct style that expands on intricate traditional Venetian glass blowing techniques used by his ancestors hundreds of years ago, "Venetian is still the ultimate form of glass blowing. Many techniques used today were created in Venice including the internal decorating techniques which we see here at their best."

The exhibit features birds that are suspended from the ceiling in flight, others are roosting and one signifies the mythical phoenix rising from the ashes, "All of them have very complicated inclusion of color and filigree technique and there's very stylized feathering of the birds which echo the actual feather structures of a bird."

Toledo is the only place you'll see this exhibit, "The exhibition will only be here at TMA then it will be dispersed again, there is no other venue for it."

It's not only his work that's been to Toledo. Tagliapietra has also been here. Page says he was the first artist to use the hot shop in the Glass Pavilion in 2006. The exhibit is free and it runs until May 25th in the Glass Pavilion.
