Local effort to help women battling cancer

Posted: Updated:

Friends and family of a local woman who lost her fight against breast cancer are hoping you can help them help others who are battling the disease. Sandy Kelly Irving died of breast cancer last year. She worked at St. Charles hospital in Oregon for 30 years.

Her friends and family say she had a huge heart and they want her kindness to live on so they're starting a scholarship fund in her memory. Holly Gusky is one of Irving's friends who  says their goal is to help several women every year, "What we'd like to do is help women fighting cancer by making them more comfortable. We would do things like getting them a comfortable robe, a massage or redecorating their bedroom. We could also help them with things like getting a wig because insurance does not cover everything for some of the cancer patients. Even a ride for a treatment."

To raise money for the scholarship fund they're hosting an all you can eat taco dinner this Saturday. It's at the Dunberger American Legion post on Pickle Road in Oregon from 2-10pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. They hope to raise several thousand dollars.
