Jacob VanDyke (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover H.S.) posted an eighth place finish on Friday afternoon as Lourdes opened the 2014 spring season with a fifth place finish as a team at the Siena Heights Spring Invitational held at Hantz Golf Club in Tecumseh, Mich.
VanDyke fired a nine-over par 81 to finish just five strokes off of the pace. Rochester's (Mich.) Chet Ryeson was the tournament medalist, winning in a scorecard playoff over Madonna's Nick Corbeil after both players shot rounds of 76.
As a team Lourdes shot 338, just four strokes behind fourth place Siena Heights "B" and 16 shots ahead of Aquinas in the eight team field. Madonna won the tournament by 12 strokes over Siena Heights and Rochester after turning in a total of 313.
Brandon Henry (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) finished second for Lourdes with a round of 85 while Ben Torchia (Sylvania, Ohio/Saint Francis H.S.) and Kevin Ritzenhaler (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) each carded 86s. Nick Flasco (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Woodridge H.S.) posted a round of 89 to complete the Lourdes lineup.
Lourdes will return to action on Monday and Tuesday as the Gray Wolves compete in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship. Monday's first of two rounds will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Stonewater Golf Club in Kentwood, Mich.
