Lunar eclipse likely obscured

Posted: Updated:

As meteorologists, we're often getting questions about space.  Our science gets its name from the "meteors" falling from clouds, like rain or hail.  While some think our heads are in the clouds, we turned to the real experts for help with eclipses.

"So what we're going to see is the earth is going to basically move in front of the moon.  So we have the sun on one side and then the earth and then the moon behind it," Cody Gerhartz said.   "And what happens is the moon is literally going to move through the shadow of the earth."

Cody Gerhartz got the astronomy itch as a kid watching Star Trek.  Luckily for kids these days, we're entering what's called a tetrad, with four total lunar eclipses viewable in the us over the next couple years.  When the weather finally cooperates, they're easy to watch.

"The nice thing about lunar eclipses is that they can be seen pretty much anywhere.  The moon is very bright.  So even in a big city like Toledo, you can sit out in your back yard and watch it."
