Toledo Football Spring Scrimmage Blue 20, White 7

Posted: Updated:

Junior quarterback Phillip Ely threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Blue Team to a 20-7 victory over the White Team in the annual Toledo Spring Football scrimmage at the Glass Bowl on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Ely hooked up with junior Zach Rogers on a 34-yard pass in the first quarter and a 29-yarder to sophomore tight end Michael Robert in the third quarter. Ely completed 17-of-30 passes. Redshirt freshman Sam Vucelich booted a pair of 33-yard field goals in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

Sophomore quarterback Logan Woodside led the White Team, connecting on 15-of-27 passes for 123 yards and one score, a 41-yarder to sophomore Corey Jones.

Much of the attention this spring focused on the battle at quarterback, a three-way race between Ely, Woodside and redshirt freshman Michael Julian. Julian did not play due to a sore arm, though he did punt three times, averaging 35.3 per kick.

"Both Phillip and Logan did a nice job moving the offense today," said head coach Matt Campbell. "What we saw today is similar to what we've seen during our 15 spring practices. There has been tremendous growth by both players this spring. And Michael Julian has probably made the greatest strides of anyone this spring."

Other offensive highlights belonged to  junior Alonzo Russell, who caught seven passes for the Blue Team. Catching four passes each were Corey Jones, Darryl Richards and Zach Yousey for the White Team, and Zach Rogers for the Blue Team. Leading rushers on the day were sophomore Marc Remy (35 yards) and senior Ricky Pringle (33 yards). Leading tacklers with six stops each were redshirt freshman Victor Cave, senior Ray Bush and sophomore Delando Johnson.

In addition to Julian, a number of other Rockets sat out with minor injuries or were recovering from off-season surgery, including sophomore running backs Kareem Hunt and Damion Jones-Moore, junior linebacker Trent Voss, and senior offensive linemen Greg Mancz and Jeff Myers.

Today's game wraps the spring practice season for the Rockets. Toledo opens its 2014 season at home vs. New Hampshire on Aug. 30.
