Lourdes took to the road on Saturday afternoon for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference softball doubleheader, and split a pair of games against Concordia (Mich.) in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Gray Wolves won the opener 12-5 before falling in the nightcap 4-3.
The Gray Wolves had to play from behind in the opener after giving up three runs in the opening inning. Lourdes put two runners aboard for Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) in the third and she delivered a two-run double scoring Taylor Derr (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) and Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.)
After Lourdes suffered an unearned run in the bottom of the third, the Gray Wolves began to take advantage of Concordia errors. Three errors in the fourth led to two unearned runs which tied the game and two more miscues in the fifth put the Gray Wolves on top.
Lourdes sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring six times to break the game open. Breyahna Guy (Romulus, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) drew a bases loaded pinch-hit walk to start the scoring while Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) and Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) each tallied two-run singles. Megyesi also and a RBI hit in the inning.
Each team scored once in the seventh to provide the final of 12-7.
Schaub, Megyesi, Roberts, and West each had two hits for Lourdes in the opener as the Gray Wolves pounded out 12 hits while taking advantage of 10 Concordia errors. Megyesi finished the game with three runs batted in while Derr scored three times.
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) earned the win (6-3) in relief, giving up just two unearned runs in 5.1 innings in the circle. Cortney Loar suffered the loss (8-4), giving up eight runs, only two of which were earned, in six innings of work.
Concordia (20-11, 3-1 WHAC) took the lead in game two with a single run in the third. Roberts tied the game in the fourth with her second home run of the season, a two-out round tripper.
The Cardinals retook the lead in the bottom of the inning only to see Lourdes answer again in the fifth. Erica Marvaso (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) led off with a walk and scored on a two-out hit by Schaub.
Megyesi led off the sixth with a triple and scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly by Roberts to give the Gray Wolves a 3-2 lead. Concordia scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth, taking advantage of Lourdes lone error of the game for an unearned run to go in front for good.
Schaub went 3-for-4 to lead Lourdes offensively while Concordia managed just five hits in game two. Corrina Rotondo earned the complete game victory (10-3), striking out eight while giving up just seven hits. Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (4-8) in relief.
