TPS and YMCA strike a deal

Posted: Updated:

After much discussion and debate, Toledo Public Schools is ready to take ownership of the Summit YMCA.

Monday the school board sealed the deal, passing a resolution to buy the property.

"The vision that they have for the building is one that will be positive for that community," Brad Toft, President and CEO of the YMCA/JCC of Greater Toledo said.

The district plans to move its headquarters and eventually, house the Head Start Program in the building.

But TPS leaders don't know yet whether they've been awarded the $13 million grant to get it up and running.  Still, they say the move makes sense.

"Looking at the performance audit we needed to consolidate buildings," Dr. Romules Durant, Superintendent of TPS said.  "It allows us to operate efficiently and effectively."

The building was already under contract with the Horizon Science Academy.

TPS will about nearly $60,000 less than the charter school because of terms and conditions outline by the Y in the proposal.

"The Horizon charter school was kind enough to recognize that the community wanted TPS to get the facility," Toft said.  "As a result we have a signed amendment to our purchase agreement."

Toft says the Y will buy out Horizon to the tune of $72,000.

In a statement, Mustafa Arslan, Superintendent of Horizon, said they were excited about the opportunity.

It goes on to say, "With an ever-present interest in the education of all students in Toledo, we are hopeful that this promised community hub will prove academically enriching for all members of the community."

TPS has until April 23rd to have specifics on paper.
