Southwyck's future still cloudy

Posted: Updated:

Acre after acre of prime land in South Toledo sits as pitted concrete and untamed grass.

The hot spot to shop for decades, sits alone; the future of the site, cloudy, even on a sunny day.

Cheryl Gensler shopped at the old Southwyck mall, she's disappointed at what she sees, telling 13abc's Bill Hormann, "It kills me it really does.  It's all so empty."

There are signs of life around the site. Several retail stores and restaurants line Reynolds Road.

One gas station has invested in renovations; a senior village is across from the vacant lot.

But that concrete and grass lot still unnerves people like Alison Bailey who says when asked, "When you drive past that and you see that empty area, what do  you think?  A lot of wasted potential."

Amy Smenner feels the same way. "It's kind of a shame that they really haven't done anything," she said.

What makes this so frustrating for Toledo is the city still does not control this property.  The owners out in Kansas City do.  And therefore, they control what, when and if anything happens at the site.

But what should happen?

South Toledo residents have different ideas, if they have ideas at all.

"What would you like to see there?", we asked Chet Nowak.  "I really don't know.  I think we've got enough stores around here.  Try something else, but I don't know what."

Andrea, a aunt to two small kids says. "I think it would be better as a safe play area for kids, whether it's an arcade or an amusement park."

Donna Cochran says we should put anything in to make it more beautiful. She says, as it stands now, it's just a blighted eyesore.

At one time, developer Larry Dillin announced he was creating a *Village at Southwyck* concept along the lines of Levis Commons.

One developer wanted to create ball fields.  Another idea included an equestrian center.

But five years later, we're still waiting.

The city of Toledo has big plans for the Reynolds Road corridor, and it's shelling out big bucks. Just last week, the city agreed to buy the site of the former Southwyck mall for $3M. That's if it can land a developer within 120 days. The designs call for a corporate headquarters. Southwyck closed in 2008. So did the Clarion hotel next door. The K-Mart next to that also pulled out, but today there's a welcome sign for some: A "now open" sign. It's on the front of the former K-Mart, showing of...
