Springfield Schools outline levy options

Posted: Updated:

The Springfield Local School District is trying to figure out how to balance its books.

Steep increases in healthcare costs, flat revenue and declining property values have school leaders tossing around the idea of a levy request.

"Unfortunately, it was the perfect storm that, kind of, hit us all at once," Kathryn Hott, Superintendent of Springfield schools said.

The district had originally put a 3.9 mil levy on the May ballot but pulled it back in March because it wouldn't generate enough money to make ends meet.

Wednesday, the school board went to the taxpayers with some other options.

"I think it's important that people know nothing has been decided or approved by the board," Hott said.  "This was our opportunity for them to communicate."

The district laid out 4 options.

If a levy, any levy, fails; permanent cuts, like 5th grade band and the school resource officer are unavoidable.

Plus, high school transportation will be gone and clubs and sports will be slashed by 50%.

Two other scenarios include; the passage of a 6.9 mil levy or a 8.9 mil levy.

But those permanent cuts still stand, plus, additional reductions.

The final option will save the district from making any cuts, however, it hinges on voters approving an 11.9 mil levy.  It would cost the average homeowner around $419 a year.

"Unfortunately I don't think the community will ever pass an 11.9 mil levy," Rick Haskins, who lives in the township, said.

The board is expected to discuss the information gathered Wednesday night.  It's unclear when a final decision will be made.
