68 graduate from the Toledo Police Academy

Posted: Updated:

The road to graduation isn't easy, but 68 men and women made it to the finish line.

They're now officially members of the Toledo Police Department.

"I'm very excited, very happy to make it to this day," Ben-Jiang Tsou, an academy graduate, said.  "It's been a hard 6 months."

Each recruit has their own reasons for wanting to become one of Toledo's finest.

For some, it runs in the family, for others, it's a calling.

"I enjoy the challenge," Sarah Dean, an academy graduate, said.  "I think this job is a great asset to me as far as wanting to reach different goals every day.

After all 68 marched across the stage, they took the oath, pinned on their badges and became TPD officers.

"This is a welcome addition to a very anemic police department," Mayor D. Michael Collins said.

He tells 13abc this is the largest class in about 30 years, and it means more feet on the street, protecting neighborhoods in the Glass City.

"We're going to need all 68," Mayor Collins said.  "They will be a very important compliment to the safety forces."

Right now, the new officers plan to enjoy the moment because come Monday, the real work begins.

The officers will be assigned with a senior officer for the next four months to complete training.

Too much of the toxic algae triggered the "do not drink" order at the start of the August. The Maumee River is one of the lake's greatest water sheds, running more than 130 miles from Indiana through Ohio to the lake. Changes to it could make all the difference. One local university is at the forefront of tracking what's going into the river.
