Lourdes wrapped up a four-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, dropping both games of a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader to Aquinas 5-4 and 5-3 at Fuller Park in Grand Rapids, Mich. Game one went eight innings before the Saints prevailed.
Aquinas built the early lead in the opener with a run in the first and two more in the second before the Gray Wolves found the scoreboard. Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the third and moved to second on a walk to Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.). After Schaub stole third, Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) grounded out to drive home Schaub and Goebel came around to score following a throwing error to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Saints responded with a run in the bottom of the third to increase the lead to 4-2, and the lead remained at two heading into the seventh inning. Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) led off with a bunt single and Schaub was hit by a pitch. Hanna Allison (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) singled to right to drive home Yeager and Megyesi followed, reaching on a fielder’s choice that scored Schaub to tie the game. Lourdes loaded the bases with one out, but could not plate another run.
Aquinas scored the winning run on a two-out single by Olivia Hrymak, her third hit of the game, in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the win.
Lourdes managed just five hits against Rebecca Shildenecker, who picked up the win (8-5). The Gray Wolves had base runners though, as she walked four, hit three, and the Saints committed two errors. Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) suffered the loss (6-8), surrendering five runs, four earned, and seven hits in the complete game effort.
Megyesi helped stake Lourdes to a lead in the opening inning of game two with a two-run home run to centerfield. Aquinas answered with a single run in the bottom of the first and took the lead two innings later with a pair of runs.
Schaub tied the game at three with a round-tripper of her own to left-center in the fifth inning, but again Aquinas responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. Back-to-back hits in the sixth allowed the Saints to add on a late insurance run.
Catlyn Hensel picked up the win (6-8), giving up three runs on five hits while walking just one. Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (4-11), giving up four earned runs on eight hits as she went the distance as well.
Megyesi and Schaub each had two hits for Lourdes in the nightcap, combining for all but one hit.
