The Bowling Green State University tennis team won the doubles point, but host Miami University rallied back to capture five singles contests en route to a 5-2 win over the Falcons Saturday afternoon (April 19). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts.
With the win, the RedHawks improve to 15-6 overall and 7-1 in MAC play, and Miami captured the MAC's regular-season title. The Falcons dropped to 10-8 and 4-4, respectively.
BGSU finishes the regular-season schedule in sixth place in the nine-team league.
The Falcons took an early lead with two convincing doubles wins on Saturday. The duo of senior Emily Reuland and sophomore Drew Fillis picked up an 8-2 victory over MU's tandem of Alix Thurman and Ana Rajkovic at the second flight. And, when BGSU freshmen Hannah Drayton and Harley Hutchison downed Christiana Raymond and Ramona Costea in third-flight action, the Brown and Orange had an early 1-0 advantage. The top-flight doubles match was not completed.
But, the RedHawks responded by winning five of the six singles matches to take the victory. Thurman topped Drayton at the fourth flight, while Rajkovic defeated Hutchison at the sixth. When Christine Guerrazzi downed Fillis in the fifth-flight match, MU had a 3-1 lead.
And, Andreea Badileanu clinched the victory for the RedHawks by downing Reuland at the second flight. The home team's fifth point came at the top flight, as Nimisha Mohan defeated senior Nikki Chiricosta.
BGSU sophomore Katie Brozovich defeated Raymond in third-flight action to give the Falcons their second point. Brozovich came up with a 6-3 win in the opening set, before Raymond responded with a 6-0 victory in the second set. As decisive as Raymond's second-set win was, however, Brozovich was nearly as dominant in the third set, posting a 6-1 win.
The top-six teams in the final conference standings will head to MU for next weekend's MAC Championships. BGSU, the sixth seed, will return to Oxford face the third-seeded team (TBA) in Friday's (April 25) quarterfinal round. The fourth- and fifth-seeded schools will meet on Friday as well, with the two winners advancing to Saturday's (April 26) semifinals. The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, April 27.
