Lourdes University stepped outside of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play for the final time during the 2014 season on Monday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader to Hillsdale 10-1 and 12-6 at Pacesetter Park.
Sarah Klopfer limited Lourdes to just one hit in the game one win (6-7), striking out five. Hillsdale jumped on top quickly with four runs in the opening inning and had built a 9-0 lead through three innings.
Lourdes found the scoreboard in the fourth as Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) delivered a one-out double to left-center and scored two batters later when Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) reached on an error.
The Chargers responded with a run in the fifth for the game’s final margin.
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) suffered the loss (6-7), giving up five runs on four hits in two innings in the circle.
Hillsdale (16-16) jumped out to a quick lead in the opening inning of game two as well. The Chargers batted around, scoring two on a home run.
The Gray Wolves answered with two in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) reached on an error to lead off the game and Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) followed with a walk. Megyesi drove home Schaub with a single up the middle and Hanna Allison (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) followed with a two-run double.
Hillsdale took the lead for good with a four-run second before a Megyesi home run to straightaway center in the third brought Lourdes to within three, 7-4. The Gray Wolves added another run in the fifth when Schaub doubled and later scored on a Charger throwing error.
A five-run sixth inning broke the 7-5 game open as the Chargers took advantage of three Lourdes errors to put the game out of reach. The Gray Wolves added their final run in the seventh as Schaub was hit by a pitch, stole second, and two ground outs later, the last by Megyesi, scored the final tally.
Megyesi finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs batted in while Schaub scored three times.
Kate Ardrey earned the win (4-3), giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits in four innings of work. Klopfer pitched the final three innings for the save. Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) gave up all 12 runs, only seven of which were earned, on 14 hits in six innings in the circle to suffer the loss (4-12).
Lourdes (12-22) will return to WHAC play on Thursday afternoon, traveling to Michigan-Dearborn for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
