Lourdes University wrapped up the 2014 regular season on Sunday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader to Cornerstone 6-2 and 5-3 at Pacesetter Park on Senior Day.
Pitchers Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) and Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) were both honored prior to the game as the first two graduating seniors in program history.
Cherry got the call in the circle in the opener, but Cornerstone rudely greeted her, scoring three times in the opening inning, utilizing three doubles. Lourdes answered in the bottom of the frame with a lead-off home run from Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.), her fourth home run of the season.
It stayed a 3-1 game into the fifth when a pair of walks and a two-out single led to the Golden Eagles’ fourth run. The Gray Wolves responded with an unearned tally in the bottom of the sixth as Schaub’s two-out fly ball to center was dropped, allowing Marche Venable (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney H.S.).
Cornerstone tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
Heidi Walburg earned the win (12-6) in the circle for the Golden Eagles, giving up just one earned run and seven hits in the complete game effort. Cherry took the loss (6-9), giving up four runs and six hits in five innings of work.
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) and Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) each had two hits for the Gray Wolves in the opener.
The Golden Eagles scored in the opening inning of game two as well, this time against Graham. A lead-off double followed by two ground outs plated the game’s first run.
Hanna Allison (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) tied the game at one in the bottom of the first with a two-out single up the middle, scoring Schaub who again reached on an error.
Cornerstone (22-14, 12-6 WHAC) plated single runs in both the second and third innings, increasing the lead to 3-1. Neither team would score again until the seventh when Walburg doubled with two outs to score a pair of key insurance runs for the Golden Eagles.
Lourdes threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as West doubled with two outs to score Erica Marvaso (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) and Goebel followed with a single to plate West. Schaub reached on an infield single, putting the tying run on base, but a groundout ended the threat.
Rachel Nelson earned the complete game win (8-5) for Cornerstone, giving up two earned runs and six hits while striking out seven. Graham took the loss (5-13), giving up five runs and 10 hits over the seven innings.
Schaub and Allison each had multi-hit efforts in the nightcap for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes (13-25, 6-12) will return to Pacesetter Park on Wednesday evening in the opening round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament beginning at 6 p.m.
