Lourdes University’s baseball team wrapped up the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader against Siena Heights at Mercy Field. The Gray Wolves walked off with a 10-9 win in the opener before falling 4-1 in game two on Senior Day at the diamond.
While the Gray Wolves were honoring their three seniors, John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.), Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.), and Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.), it was a sophomore who delivered the heroics in the opener.
Victory Diaz (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf H.S.) went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, and delivered the game-winning hit, a bases loaded single to right-center to plate Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville[Ohio] H.S.), who opened the bottom of the ninth with a triple. The RBI was the fourth of the game for Diaz.
Lourdes jumped on top quickly in game one, scoring six times in the opening inning. Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) doubled home Crooks with the game’s first run and Fitzgerald followed with a RBI single. Diaz came through with a two-run bases loaded single to make it 4-0 Gray Wolves before Jake Conklin (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) delivered a two-run single of his own.
The large lead was short-lived though, as the Saints responded with five unearned runs in the second inning to close the gap to within one. Lourdes committed three errors in the inning, as all five runs came across the plate with two outs.
Siena Heights tied the game at six with a single run in the third and took the lead with another tally in the fourth. After the Saints’ lead grew to three, 9-6, Lourdes battled back. Mike Calloway (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) drove home a run with a RBI single in the sixth. In the seventh, Diaz had a two-out single to score Fitzgerald and scored himself one batter later on a double by Kovar, tying the game at nine and setting up the ninth inning heroics.
Fitzgerald had a three-hit game and Redies added two more in addition to Diaz’s four-hit contest as Lourdes registered 15 hits in the opener. Siena Heights had four players with three or more hits as part of its 18-hit attack.
Sean Koerber (Grosse Pointe, Mich./North H.S.) earned the win (2-5) in relief with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen while Kyle Kuhr suffered the loss (0-3).
Siena Heights (17-27, 6-18 WHAC) scored first in game two, manufacturing a run in the top of the third, only to have Lourdes answer in the bottom half of the frame. Crooks delivered a RBI single to score Nick Mazgay (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg H.S.).
Siena Heights added three runs in the fifth, two of which were unearned, and Lourdes was not able to battle back for a second straight game.
Redies had two of Lourdes five hits in the game while the Saints managed just eight of their own.
Matt King went the distance for the complete game victory (3-4), giving up just the one unearned run. He struck out two and did not walk anyone. Lee Lovejoy (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) suffered the loss, giving up four runs, only two of which were earned, and six hits in five innings on the hill.
Lourdes sees its season come to a close with a 14-28 record overall and an 11-20 mark in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
