Brandon Hoelzer (Fremont Ross/Fremont, Ohio) tied for medalist honors as the No. 1 Owens Community College men's golf team captured first place in the Lorain County Invitational at Elyria Country Club today.
The Express shot a 315 as a team to finish eight strokes ahead of second place Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Columbus State Community College (327), Lakeland Community College (340) and Lorain County Community College (362) rounded out the field.
Individually, Hoelzer shot a 77 to tie Cincinnati State's Taylor Suggs for first place. Hoelzer's effort was aided by Harrison Long (78, Wilnecote/Tanoth, U.K.), Kirby Manown (79, Belle Vernon/Belle Vernon, Penn.) and Philippe Weppernig (81, Luzern, Switzerland).
Other members of the starting lineup for the Express included Dru Hein (85, Jasper/Jasper, Ind.) and Tyler Crossley (90, Jonathan Alder/Plain City, Ohio).
Timothy Dawkins (Big Rapids/Big Rapids, Mich.) and Riley Robinson (St. Mary Catholic Central/Monroe, Mich.) shot an 80 and a 78, respectively, as individuals.
With their win, the Express increased their lead in the conference over second place Cincinnati State, while it was their third straight tournament championship. Moreover, the Express have won 12 of their past 13 tournaments dating back to the fall season.
Individually, Hoelzer has now either tied for or won medalist honors in the past three tournaments.
The No. 1 team in the nation will be back in action tomorrow in the Lakeland Invitational at Quail Hollow Country Club beginning at 9:30 a.m.
