Controversial Adrian sculpture to be moved

Posted: Updated:
We have a follow-up to a controversy in Adrian sparked by a sculpture.

City Administrator Shane Horn says the sculpture known as “Blue Human Condition” will have a new home.

Weather-permitting, the sculpture will be moved to Yew Park on Tuesday.  Yew Park is located on Winter Street just north of Maumee Street in downtown Adrian.

According to a news release, “The site was chosen for the sculpture because it allows ‘Blue Human Condition’ to remain accessible to any citizen who makes the choice to visit the park.”

Last week some parents complained to city leaders that it looked sexually suggestive and inappropriate.

The sculpture features seven human figures without sex organs leaning against each other.

The sculpture was put in place Monday downtown between the police station and city chambers which is down the street from the public library.  It was approved by a committee as part of Adrian’s Art Discovery public art trail.

The city’s decision to remove the sculpture and replace it with a new one ignited a firestorm of feedback in support of the art piece.

An online petition to keep the structure called #savethebluehumans has almost 700 signatures.

Horn released a statement Monday saying, “I want to personally thank the many people in the community who provided input to City Hall.  Public input supports government transparency and improves decision making.  I recognize there are likely to be people on both sides of the issue who are not satisfied, but I believe this decision provides an appropriate resolution.”

Too much of the toxic algae triggered the "do not drink" order at the start of the August. The Maumee River is one of the lake's greatest water sheds, running more than 130 miles from Indiana through Ohio to the lake. Changes to it could make all the difference. One local university is at the forefront of tracking what's going into the river.
