Tracking a stormy evening

Posted: Updated:
It's been a very quiet severe weather season; of that, there's no doubt.  Our frigid winter was largely to blame, as we were much too cold for clashing temperatures.

Before this weekend, there were only 109 reported tornadoes across the country in 2014.  That may sound like a lot, but that's well below average.

Since this weekend, though, there have been at least 138 tornado reports (as we type this, there are several active tornadoes not included).

Toledo and the entire viewing area are under a "slight risk," which is elevated above the chance of normal thunderstorms.  Our biggest threats tonight are after 7:00 p.m. and are for larger hail and damaging winds.  As always, be ready for the isolated tornado.

We had a very warm day and towering clouds are growing as humidity begins to peak in the afternoon sun.  Our first showers are right in place in Hillsdale, right where we thought they'd be.  Those showers are well placed on the edge of a miniature low pressure core, with energy racing in out of the jet stream.  We'll track showers connecting the dots from Grand Rapids to Fort Wayne to Dayton.

Even after these storms pass through, we expect widespread rain shower activity well into the night.  Be prepared for ponding on local roadways.
