Honor Flight braves torrential downpour to visit WWII Memorial

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC - It was an emotional day for many veterans who braved the wind and the rain to visit the World War II Memorial in the nation’s capital.

“It means a lot, it means a lot,” said Paul Stowell, a veteran who traveled from Toledo with the Northwest Ohio Honor Flight.

“I'm glad to be here,” Stowell said. “I'm proud to have served, I did my part.”

Nearly 60 veterans made the trip to see the memorial. They took pictures, they learned about the memorial, and they proudly displayed their branch of service. Plus, they shared stories about their time in the military with other veterans.

“I wanted to meet as many as I could. They're all real nice gentlemen – and there are some awfully nice ladies around, too,” said James Pahl, a Korean War veteran.

But it was not just the veterans who enjoyed the rainy day; many brought their family members for the visit, too. Brenda Pahl came along with her dad, James.

“Coming back and seeing how America's dedicated so much and finally to these great men and women who have done such great service, it's a wonderful, wonderful feeling,” Pahl said. “We have a great country and great people.”

This is the first of four Honor Flights planned for this year.
