Toledo family of 6 shares an incredible story of survival

Posted: Updated:
Around 9:30 Thursday night, flames broke out at the Heathbriar Apartments in Toledo.  Shortly after the call came in, dispatchers received reports that people living inside were jumping from their balconies.  One mother living there tells 13abc she tossed her children from her third story apartment, into the arms of their father and a neighbor below.

Sydney Oats says her entire family is still recovering from the terrifying ordeal.  She says she was putting her children to bed around 9:30pm, when she smelled smoke from the apartment below.  Oats says her family had no choice but to jump from the window to safety.

Her husband went first.  Then, Oats says she tossed her four children to him from the balcony.  "He jumped.  I gave the two-year-old, I gave the three-year-old and then I dropped my 10 weeks old and then they caught all of them," Oats explains.  "It was three of them, and they all had their arms out.  So, I kind of went right where their arms were.  It was terrifying and I was nervous and scared, as any mother would be, but I had to get my kids safe."

Oats then jumped, but landed on her collarbone.  She says she took her family to her mother's nearby home, then to the hospital.
