Maumee dealership vandalism: “They targeted new cars only”

Posted: Updated:
Maumee police are searching for the vandals who spray painted nearly half of the new car inventory at Rouen Toyota on Conant Street overnight.

We're talking about 51 new vehicles, including a more than $50,000 truck. The orange paint went right through the grill.

This may not be the custom paint job buyers are looking for.

"I came into work this morning about 7:30 a.m. to start my day and I noticed our new cars are orange,” says Jason Middaugh, a sales manager at Rouen Toyota in Maumee.

Middaugh called police when he discovered row after row of new vehicles tagged with spray paint.

For whatever reason, whoever did this completely avoided new vans and all used vehicles.

"I really don't know other than maybe some youngster who has nothing better to do. Should join a sport, I don't know,” says Middaugh.

There is about $3 million worth of inventory on the lot. Rouen estimates it’ll cost at least $8,000 for a professional detailer to clean the cars.

"It seems as though the paint is removable,” says Middaugh.  “It's going to take man hours. A lot of man hours. You're talking hours per car. 50 cars. So hundreds of hours to get it done, but there is not actual damage-damage to the cars. It's all on the clear coat and it seems as though it's turf paint which is washable."

This vandalism attack falls in the middle of car selling season.

"We're having some of the best months we've ever seen month after month, you just want to keep that momentum going, so it'll just be keeping a positive attitude about things,” says Middaugh.
