Run puts spotlight on teen drinking

Posted: Updated:
Parents who lost their son to drinking and driving hope the first annual Brian Matters 5K run will help put the spotlight on the dangers of teen drinking.

Doctors Brian and Cindy Hoeflinger are doing all they can to draw attention to the issue.

Dr. Brian Hoeflinger said, "We are just trying to bring awareness to the problem of teenage drinking, and it's a problem that is out there that a lot of people don't recognize. We as parents didn't recognize it before Brian died, but we sure recognize it now."

Mom Dr. Cindy Hoeflinger added, "I think they would be amazed at how many kids stand beside them it would be a huge relief to say it's okay, it's cool we don't have to drink."

Bowsher High School senior Richard Hutt said the temptation is always there. "Every weekend it's always an option. It's up to you to make the decision whether to make the right one or the wrong one."

The route of the 5K took the runners and walkers right past the site of the accident that took Brian's life.

Ahmad Zakary has known the family for ten years. "It was a feeling of loss, but then after a while it was more of a union and a feeling of everyone coming together."

More than 250 people took part in Saturday's 5K. All of the money raised goes to the Brian Matters Foundation.

The Hoeflingers will be speaking at Fremont Ross High School on May 6.  To learn more about the organization and its events, go to their website.

The city of Toledo has big plans for the Reynolds Road corridor, and it's shelling out big bucks. Just last week, the city agreed to buy the site of the former Southwyck mall for $3M. That's if it can land a developer within 120 days. The designs call for a corporate headquarters. Southwyck closed in 2008. So did the Clarion hotel next door. The K-Mart next to that also pulled out, but today there's a welcome sign for some: A "now open" sign. It's on the front of the former K-Mart, showing of...
