Jeep workers worried about smoke from recycling center fire

Posted: Updated:
As smoke from a recycling center fire that started on Friday continues to blanket parts of North Toledo, 13abc has been fielding calls from nearby Jeep workers saying that the smoke is affecting workers on the at the nearby North Toledo Complex.

The blaze started early Friday at the Stickney Recycling Center and firefighters say it's a tough one to fight and that they may not have it completely out for a week.

During the course of the day several workers from the plant and supplier park called in to the newsroom to say smoke was rolling into parts of the complex. They say workers are wearing surgical masks on the line due to the smell. The workers, who wanted to remain anonymous said some have even been treated for smoke inhalation.

One worker said, "My concern is the toxins that these individuals are breathing for 10 hours at a time. We've already just been here for a short few hours already, and we've already got people stressing concerns of sore throat burning eyes, constant coughing. The smoke is thicker, it's getting worse by the hour."

13abc reached out to union leaders and plant officials during the evening, but didn't hear back. Earlier in the afternoon, Bruce Baumhower from the union said he was unaware of any reports of smoke issues.
