Generator caused fire that destroyed Ottawa Lake home

Posted: Updated:
A home in Ottawa Lake, MI, has major damage after an early morning fire.

Flames tore through the home on Sunday morning. A neighbor across the road saw the fire and ran over to notify the family. By the time crews arrived, the house was already engulfed.

Ottawa Lake Fire Chief said, "I can see this house from mine and I could see fire though the room, so I knew we were on defense before we even go started.

The chief said a generator inside the hope was to blame. "We lost power in this area of town last night and when he got powered back on it re-energized his house, but he did not throw the breaker back on his generator from what we understand."

The family along with their pets managed to make it out of the house safely.

The chief says this fire could have been prevented. "Even an automatic shut off or switch over that you out on any generator system would have taken care of it."
