Michigan voters back local tax measures at polls

Posted: Updated:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Voters in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township have given their sound support to a public transit tax that is expected to raise nearly $4.4 million in annual funding.

They were among voters in several Michigan communities who went to the polls on Tuesday.

Mlive.com reports that the vote in favor of the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority's 0.7-mill transit tax in the three Washtenaw County communities was 13,949 to 5,783, with all precincts reporting.

Grand Rapids voters also approved a 15-year income tax to fund what's being called "vital streets." The tax wouldn't raise the current rates, but it would prevent an existing rate increase from expiring next year.

Meanwhile, voters in the Detroit suburb of Birmingham rejected a $21.5 million bond proposal to improve the Baldwin Public Library.

Backers of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing certain voting rights in Ohio have failed to collect enough signatures to put it on this fall's ballot. Supporters of the proposed "Ohio Voters Bill of Rights" say their goal now is to place it before voters in 2015. They are vowing to keep the issue on Ohioans' minds.
