Area non-profit helps homeless families

Posted: Updated:
. - After closing back in 2011 an area nonprofit is back in business.

Family Promise of Greater Toledo helps families who are dealing with homelessness.

There are thousands of people in northwest Ohio struggling with a place to live, many of them have children.

Family promise recently reopened after a donation of a home from an area church.

Their concept is simple, keep families together during a time of need and get parents back on their feet.

Here's how family promise works, a family is referred through United Way's 211 program.

Once accepted parents and children spend daytime hours in the house going over life skills, finding a job, maybe even getting finances in order.

Then at night, they go to one of 10 churches who volunteer to cook the families dinner, provide fellowship and a place to sleep for the night.

Executive Director Heather Allen says the concept is different than other shelters.

"Many times homeless families looking for a shelter are already at a low point and then you have to be split up from your 13-year-old son, it's devastating," says Allen.

The nonprofit just reopened in right now has one resident.

They hope to service additional families in the coming weeks but they still need help.

They are looking for up to 10 additional churches to serve as volunteers within the "Family Promise" network.

They're also looking for volunteers at the day center to help adults that are trying to find jobs or write a resume.

Additional supplies are needed too. Everything from cleaning supplies to detergent even a play place in the backyard for children.

The nonprofit is funded solely through private donations. They're on the right track, but they're hoping the community gets involved to help families right here in northwest Ohio.

"People need to take back their neighborhoods. And taking back your neighborhoods means you n...
