Secretary of State responds to BOE after tense election night

Posted: Updated:
After an all-nighter at the Lucas County Board of Elections, the results of Your Vote 2014 are in.

Tensions ran high at the BOE during the overnight hours, as board members tried to figure out what happened to five memory cards that were "missing" from a voting machine.

In the end, the chair of the BOE says the cards in question were in storage and never used in the first place.

Counting the votes went hand-in-hand with counting the hours. The race for Toledo's District Two council seat, vacated by D. Michael Collins when he was elected mayor, was up for grabs in a special election.

We’re told the race had to be run on a separate computer server, because the deadline for candidates to submit was too close to the cut-off.

Matt Cherry was declared the winner of the four-way race early Wednesday morning.

"A lot of things that could have been prepared for were not prepared for,” says BOE member Jon Stainbrook. “The staff, the deputy director and director, did not prepare for this election, and it was clear in the results."

"Tempers got a little hot there for a while, says BOE member John Irish, “but it has nothing to do with the outcome. We feel very good about the results."

In the end, all board members agree, the count is accurate, even if it took all night to get there. In fact, Lucas County ended up being the last county in the state to finish counting votes.

Ohio's Secretary of State had some strong words for the board after. The office sent the following statement to 13abc:

"Secretary Husted is disappointed in the situation that has developed at the Lucas County Board of Elections. The board is seemingly incapable of overcoming petty differences and personal issues in order to solve problems. The situation must be fixed. The Transparency Committee will meet again and the Secretary has asked that recommendations be submitted to him as soon as possible. The Secretary will wait for those recommendations before taking any action."
