Off-duty officers catch convicted killer wanted on parole violation

Posted: Updated:
Two off duty police officers help to catch a convicted killer wanted on a parole violation. The suspect ran from a Monroe Sheriff Deputy at Sterns and Whiteford in Monroe County.

"We really do appreciate their efforts," said Detective Sergeant Jeff Pauli from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

60 year old Jimmy Clayton was quickly arrested after he took off running from a Monroe County sheriff's deputy. He was tackled by off duty Toledo police officer John Mattimore and off duty Lenawee county officer Jim Eaton. It all started Sunday around 10:30am. A deputy saw Clayton walking near Sterns and Whiteford rd.

"He had some bags with him and she stopped and made contact with him. She was a little suspicious to her what he was up too," said Detective Sergeant Pauli.

She ran his name and a warrant from Tennessee popped up. Clayton served time for murder and was wanted for violating his parole.

"When she informed him he was under arrest she grabbed ahold of him he jerked away and took off running," said

He didn't get far thanks to the two off duty police officers. These are pictures taken by a citizen of the officers tackling the suspect.

"They were actually in two separate cars. They saw what happened with the deputy and this guy. They got out of their car and ran after him. Turns out both were off duty police officers who didn't know each other," said Detective Sergeant Pauli.

The sheriff's office says the officers should be rewarded.

"We appreciate the efforts and everything and I think they should be recognized by their departments," said Detective Sergeant Pauli.

TPD office John Mattimore was just recognized as TPD's officer of the month for May.
