Voters reject Bedford $70 million school bond request

Posted: Updated:
It was a disappointing day for Bedford school leaders after voters shot down a bond request that would have raised $70 million.  More than 2,000 people voted against the bond issue.

The 4.37 mill proposal would have cost the average homeowner about $15 more a month, and brought in more than $70 million over the next 30 years. District leaders say the money was needed to upgrade old buildings, fix pothole-filled parking lots and even build a new elementary school.

With three kids in the Bedford school district, Shirley Kerley is very invested in their education.  The busy mom wants to see improvements in their schools, but says the latest bond request was too high.

"I would like to see improvements but I would also like to see another plan that maybe wouldn't have to be so massive," says Kerley.  "Hopefully they'll cut it down some and it won't be so scary."

Not all parents agree. Lisa Krider who has lived in Bedford for 14 years says all of her kids have graduated from the district, but she would have liked to have seen the bond issue pass.

"People just need to wake up," says Krider. "If they want to have good schools for their children and they want to be able to have an education for them to continue on, they need to be able to offer more."

School board president Michael Smith says he never expected the measure to lose by as many votes as it did.  Leaders plan to go back to the community for more input and to place another bond request on the ballot this November.

"If we had done something less, we would have been doing a disservice to our community and to our students," Smith tells 13abc.  "The board will regroup. We'll seek again community input so that we can draft something that this community is willing to live with, willing to invest in."
