Report details 2nd sexual assault at Flower Hospital

Posted: Updated:
An alleged rape is now being confirmed as the cause for an investigation into patient safety at Flower Hospital.

A 73-page document was released Thursday afternoon by the US Department of Health and Human Services. One of the new revelations in the report is that a second alleged sexual assault happened back in 2011 at the Flower Hospital psychiatric unit.

Earlier this week, Flower Hospital went on record, saying it takes full responsibility for patient safety on its campus. The hospital said it had submitted a specific plan of action to address charges that it had not protected their patient adequately, when the latest alleged rape happened on April 1 of this year.

Flower Hospital has submitted an action plan that addresses both of the incidents, and the plan is being accepted by the Dept. of Health and Human Services. Flower will continue to keep it's Medicare and Medicaid funding.

ProMedica sent the following statement to 13abc:

We sincerely apologize for the impact on our patients and their families. ProMedica Flower Hospital has been diligent in owning our responsibility to patient safety and have put several comprehensive measures in place. Some of those measures include additional safety and security, the immediate investigation of issues and enhanced staff and patient education.

All of the issues raised have been addressed and we are grateful that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have approved our plan and verified its implementation through an onsite survey. ProMedica Flower Hospital is fully operational and there will be no interruption to any services to our patients.

Over the next 90 days, inspectors will be visiting the hospital campus unannounced to make sure the hospital is making the changes it has promised.
