The Patriot Project honors fallen soldiers

Posted: Updated:
May 8th is not an easy day for Tiffany Eckert and her two children, Marlee and Myles.

"It seems like just yesterday, but then sometimes it seems like it was a really long time ago," Tiffany Eckert said.  "So much life has happened, so many things, so many changes."

9 years ago, her husband Sergeant Andy Eckert was killed while serving overseas in Iraq.

But this year, instead of laying low, they did something they've never done. The Eckerts helped kick off a special program that will honor Andy forever.

"We're honored to be here and we're so excited about the Patriot Soil Project," Eckert said.

The Patriot Soil Project takes soil from the resting places of soldiers in every state, then use it to plant a tree in their honor on the White House lawn.

Thursday, Andy's family put the first scoops in the jar, officially launching the program.

"I think it would make them [other families] feel like their person who passed away is special," Marlee Eckert, Andy's daughter told 13abc.

The founders of the project say they were inspired by the Eckert family.

Young Myles captured the attention of the nation after he found $20 in a parking lot and gave it to another serviceman with a note about his dad, Andy.

"It was so compelling and so moving, it was the whole concept of paying it forward," Gary Robinson, founder of The Patriot Soil Project said.

It was a simple act of kindness that will keep the memories of soldiers alive for years to come.
