Ice breaker is back in Lake Erie on new mission

Posted: Updated:
The record breaking winter kept the crew of the Bristol Bay icebreaker on their toes from late November through late April. Now the ship is back in the area on a new role. Most of this week the Coast Guard’s ice breaker has been deploying navigational aids for boaters in western Lake Erie. The buoys have to be taken out before winter arrives and deployed each spring after the ice melts away.

The buoys help out boaters a lot like road signs assist drivers on the open road. This year’s harsh winter has delayed the buoy deployment by more than a month. In a normal year all of the navigational aids are out by early May. This year it could be early June before everything is out. The Bristol Bay will be putting out a total of 196 buoys marking the safe water from the unsafe water from Toledo, OH to Buffalo, NY.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Civilian employees at Ohio's largest military base will have until Aug. 1 to notify officials if they plan to retire or leave with incentives ahead of hundreds of layoffs this fall.
