Thieves break into Garfield tomb

Posted: Updated:
Police in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, say thieves broke into the monument of President James A. Garfield and stole a set of commemorative spoons.

Northeast Ohio Media Group reports that someone broke in at historic Lakeview Cemetery by shattering a window in the 180-foot-tall monument.  A cemetery worker discovered the theft last Wednesday.

Garfield was born in the Cleveland suburb of Moreland Hills. He was elected in 1880 as the nation's 20th president, but served just 200 days. He was shot at a train station in Washington on July 2, 1881, by a man who had been rejected for a federal appointment. Garfield died two months later.
