Senior LHP Ryan Wilkinson was selected the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 5-11, the league office announced on Monday. Wilkinson’s selection marks the first time this season that a Rocket has been picked as either the division’s top hurler or hitter.
The Munster, IN native is also receiving this distinguished honor for the first time in his collegiate career.
The two-time All-MAC honoree tossed a three-hit gem and paced Toledo to a 1-0 series-opening victory against Western Michigan on Saturday at Scott Park. Wilkinson went the distance for the 11th time in his UT career, tied for 10th most in school history, and faced only 32 batters in earning his team-best sixth triumph in 2014. Wilkinson kept the WMU hitters off-balance all afternoon and finished with a season-high eight strikeouts and no walks. The 2013 first-team All-MAC selection retired the opposition in order on six occasions and the most batters he faced in an inning was five in the seventh frame.
The last Rocket to throw a complete-game shutout was Kyle Shaw at Eastern Michigan on May 6, 2013.
Overall this spring, Wilkinson is 6-4 with a squad-best 60 punchouts and a team-low 2.27 ERA in a squad-high 95.1 frames of work. He currently sits first in the MAC in innings pitched (7.33), second in ERA, tied for second in games started (13), complete games (4) and shutouts (1), tied for sixth in victories, tied for eighth in strikeouts and 10th in opponent batting average (.252, 87-for-345).
Wilkinson and the Rockets (20-30) will close out their non-conference schedule tomorrow when they travel to Youngstown State. The opening pitch against the Penguins is slated for 5:35 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
