Sylvania teacher accused of relationship with student

Posted: Updated:
A Sylvania teacher has been removed from the classroom for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a high school student in the district. The investigation was launched toward the end of April.

Sylvania administrators say the elementary school teacher is on paid administrative leave. The female teacher allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a male high school student.

"It's inappropriate between the high school student and the teacher," says concerned citizen Isabel Monroe.

"Everyone is innocent until they are proven guilty, but nonetheless there is that fine line which we can't cross. We just have to protect our children. There's no two ways about that, and sometimes we even have to go beyond the law to protect our children," says resident Rich Brennan.

Sylvania school administrators reported the allegation to the Sylvania Police Department. Captain Rick Schnoor says they met with the prosecutor and no charges will be filed.

"The juvenile is over the age of consent, which is 16 in Ohio. The suspect or the person of interest in this case is a teacher, however, this teacher does not have authority over the juvenile in question, so it is not a violation," says Captain Rick Schnoor of the Sylvania police department.

What does that mean?

"Coach/player situation, or a student/teacher where the teacher directly supervises. These two individuals are not in the same school, not in the same class," says Captain Schnoor.

School leaders also contact Lucas County Children Services so its division can investigate the allegation.  School leaders say they hope to have the investigation completed by next week.
