Mumps and Measles make unwelcome comeback

     The mumps and measles are making a worrisome comeback.  Ohio has one of the biggest combined outbreaks in the country.  The measles outbreak in Ohio is concentrated in Knox County which is just of Columbus.  Health department officials say it was brought to an Amish Community by an Amish Missionary returning from the Philippines, where they caught it.  The Amish are unvaccinated and it made the perfect storm for an outbreak.  Symptoms of Measles include cough, fever, red eyes, and the classic rash.  Another tell tale symptom is couplet spots, which are located in the back of the mouth, and are characterized by white spots with a red base.

The mumps outbreak is still centered in the Columbus region, including students and staff at Ohio State University.  There are over 180 confirmed cases and it's still spreading.  Health officials say, now that students are returning home for the summer, we may see the outbreak spread out to other areas of the country.  The classic swollen glands are often accompanied by a very high fever and other cold like symptoms.

In both cases, the Ohio Department of Health is imploring people to make sure they're vaccinated.  It's distributing almost 12-thousand doses of the vaccine to various hard hit areas around the state.  The vaccine usually takes effect in two weeks.

    A young man's body was found in a landfill in Lorain County Tuesday. Sheriff's investigators say the body is that of 22-year-old Cory Barron of Fremont. The BGSU graduate was last seen Friday at a concert at Progressive Field. Investigators say he left one group of friends to meet another and then vanished. An autopsy is set for Wednesday to determine how he died.

Central California company Wawona Packing is voluntarily recalling peaches, nectarines and plums because of a possible listeria contamination. The affected fruit was packaged and shipped to retailers between June 1 and July 12. The company has since shut down its packing lines and sanitized the facility.
