Mumps and Measles make unwelcome comeback

Posted: Updated:
The mumps and measles are making a worrisome comeback.  Ohio has one of the biggest combined outbreaks in the country.  The measles outbreak in Ohio is concentrated in Knox County which is just of Columbus.  Health department officials say it was brought to an Amish Community by an Amish Missionary returning from the Philippines, where they caught it.  The Amish are unvaccinated and it made the perfect storm for an outbreak.  Symptoms of Measles include cough, fever, red eyes, and the classic rash.  Another tell tale symptom is couplet spots, which are located in the back of the mouth, and are characterized by white spots with a red base.

The mumps outbreak is still centered in the Columbus region, including students and staff at Ohio State University.  There are over 180 confirmed cases and it's still spreading.  Health officials say, now that students are returning home for the summer, we may see the outbreak spread out to other areas of the country.  The classic swollen glands are often accompanied by a very high fever and other cold like symptoms.

In both cases, the Ohio Department of Health is imploring people to make sure they're vaccinated.  It's distributing almost 12-thousand doses of the vaccine to various hard hit areas around the state.  The vaccine usually takes effect in two weeks.
