Monroe Co. road getting much needed improvement

Posted: Updated:
Samaria Road has been in bad shape for more than five decades.  The new state budget sets aside more than $200 million to fix Michigan roads. Neighbors in Samaria say it's their turn to get a little of that money to make driving a lot easier.

"The roads were never right to begin with and the last 20 years it's been fairly intolerable," says John Kreuchauf with the Samaria Heritage Committee.

"We want good roads every other county has good roads," says another local driver, Linda Kudelka.

State leaders have earmarked $5 million to improve samaria road between U.S. 23 and Telegraph Road.  Crews will completely remove and replace the crumbling pavement on the nine and a half mile stretch.

"I drove five miles and hour and I kept two tires off the side of the road it was so bad," says Rep. Dale Zorn who helped secure the money.  "It's very important to get it done."

But some worry the project could cost more.  The Monroe County Road Commission will oversee the work and has agreed to pay for extra expenses the $5 million won't cover.

Crews will have to do preliminary work on the road before re paving can start in June or July.  After decades of dangerous rides and taking unnecessary detours, neighbors are nervously optimistic their ride could get a little smoother.

"We're celebrating and we're skeptical at the same time," says Kreuchauf.
