Ohio license plate laws

Posted: Updated:
Councilman Larry Sykes' traffic stop has raised some questions about Ohio license plate laws. What's legal and what's not? Law enforcement officials say, if you have a tinted covering over you plate, get rid of it

The dash-cam video of Sykes' traffic stop is the talk of Northwest Ohio. He was stopped for not having a front license plate.

"If I have to have a front plate I would think everybody else would be expected to as well," says driver Joe Lindsey.

"I live in Michigan. We only have to have a license plate on the back of the car. We don't have to have it on the front. But, I know when I lived in Ohio, you had to have one in the front and the back," says driver Janice Hood.

13abc talked with Ohio State Highway Patrol lieutenant William Bowers about the rules of the road. The state patrol's main mission is traffic enforcement. Ohio law requires all drivers to have a front and a back license plate.

"The windshield does not count as the front of the vehicle. The front of the vehicle is the bumper," said Lt. Williams Bowers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The men and women who patrol our streets must be able to see your plate.

"The rear plate the license plate nor the numbers or the registration sticker can be obscured," says Lt. Bowers.

Bowers says tinted license plate covers are illegal.

"They have to be able to see that when they are driving behind the vehicle. A lot of times you can see if the plate is valid or expired," said Lt. Bowers.

It's up to the officer whether or not they give you ticket. In Sykes case the officer gave him a warning and let him go. In Toledo if you are stopped for a plate violation it could cost you up to $143.00
