Getting Off Opiate Pain Medication

Posted: Updated:
The one common thread you'll find amongst all recovering heroin addicts:  They started their drug use by abusing prescription opiate pain medications. For many, it was a legitimate reason for taking the pain medication to begin with.  According to pain management specialists, a small percentage of people taking these medications have a genetic predisposition to addiction.  And soon, these people are taking the medication for the euphoric effect of the opiate rather than the effect it has on pain.

People who fit into this category know well they have an issue with the medication.  That's when they need to work very closely with their doctor to gradually wean off the pain medication.  Doctors say this will get them off the medication, but they will generally need additional psychological help and support to make sure they stay clean in the long run.
