DETROIT (AP) - Volunteers are planning to plant 15,000 maple and oak saplings in a distressed Detroit neighborhood as part of years-long project to bring new woodlands into the city.

The planting Saturday is part of the Hantz Woodlands tree-growing project on the east side. Along with stepped-up demolition of vacant houses and blight removal, it aims to improve the face of the city and attract new residents.

Project founder John Hantz says the trees - when grown - will resemble a mini-forest and be used for lumber. Hantz, who founded a network of financial services businesses, says he's put more than $1 million into the project so far.

His project was approved last year by Detroit's emergency manager and calls for the cleanup of 140 acres and the razing of 50 vacant houses.
