Grass from University of Findlay grabs national attention

Posted: Updated:
It's spring so everything is going green around the area, but a lawn chemical mistake at the University of Findlay has a lot of that campus in the brown right now.

About 75% of the university’s usually green campus is brown. And while a lot of us have had lawn disasters, this one is a very visible mistake that is getting attention from all over the country.

Brianna Patterson is the media relations coordinator for the university, "We've been surprised that it rose to a level of national attention, but it is spring, and people are thinking lawn care," she says.

What everyone is talking about? Much of the university’s nationally-recognized campus is brown.

"The University of Findlay has a great reputation for having a beautiful grounds. Our grounds crew works hard to maintain the campus and last summer we were awarded an America in Bloom award for our very beautiful campus."

What happened? A private lawn company hired to put fertilizer on the lawn accidentally applied weed killer instead.

Patterson says it wiped out the grass in about a week.

"Mistakes happen,” she says. “Unfortunately, this one happened in a very visible location.”

The university will not name the company involved, and, at this point, it’s not clear just how much it will cost to green things back up, but Patterson says it won't be cheap. "We are working with the contractors insurance company to cover the cost of the repairs," she says.

Patterson says there have been plenty of entertaining headlines about the lawn snafu. "Do a search on Twitter, Google or Facebook, and you'll find plenty,” she says. “I saw one this morning that was pretty funny. It said something like ‘The grass is not always greener…if you're on campus.’ I thought that was cute."

The process of re-sodding part of the lawn is now underway and the rest of it will be re-seeded. There’s no word on a timeline for everything to be green again.

The university is once again up for an America in Bloom award this year. The judges will be on campus next month.
