First Energy warns customers of Green Dot phone scam

Posted: Updated:
FirstEnergy, the parent company of Toledo Edison is warning customers about a scam.

A crook calls posing as an employee of the electric company and threatens to shut off the power unless an immediate payment is made with a prepaid debit card such as a Green Dot card.

These cards are available and many convenience and drug stores and can be used to pay bills. However, First Energy says they have nothing to do with these calls and that their employees would never call with instructions to use a Green Dot card as the company does not accept Green Dot.

FirstEnergy Vice President Ronald Green said, "Customers should know that if they get a call from someone demanding payment of their electric bill by using a Green Dot card they are being scammed and should report the crime to local authorities."

He goes on to say that the company does sometimes call to remind customers if accounts are behind, but that customers would be expected to pay using established payment options.

The company says it's payment options include:
  • eBill (Electronic Billing) - customers can view and pay their bills online.
  • Pay with a Credit Card - one-time payment or automatically charged to your Visa®, MasterCard®, or Discover® credit or debit card.
  • Equal Payment Plan (OH, PA, NJ, and NY) - uniform bill payments can be made to avoid seasonal fluctuation of payment amounts.
  • Average Payment Plan (WV and MD) - for residential customers who wish to level out their bill payments.
  • Pay by Phone - use FirstEnergy's automated phone system.
  • Pay in Person - customers may make payments, for a nominal fee per transaction, at any authorized payment agent location. Fees may vary by individual location.
  • Pay by Mail - customers may choose to receive their bill in the mail and make a payment the same way.
