Coast Guard: boaters need to always wear life jackets

Posted: Updated:
With Memorial Day weekend just one week away, the Great Lakes coast Guard is stressing the importance of putting on a life jacket when you hit the water.

It's all part of National Safe Boating Week. The season is already off to a deadly start after four people lost their lives last month.

The message this year: Ready... Set... Wear It!

It's the law to have a life jacket for every person on board a boat, but the Coast Guard wants you to go a step further and wear that best at all times.

Christopher Hoover from Toledo Sail and Power Squadron said, "The problem is when you need the life jackets is usually when there's an emergency when the waves kick up or something bad is happening."

The outreach program held at the National Museum of the Great Lakes was one of 22 happening across Ohio to help prevent drownings.

The Coast Guard says nearly 84% of drowning deaths last year involved victims who were not wearing life jackets.
