Increased Atlantic Salmon stocking in Lake Huron

Posted: Updated:
Michigan natural resources officials are asking anglers to notify the state if they catch Atlantic salmon.

That's so authorities can measure the effectiveness of their program to increase the number of salmon being stocked in the lake.

The Alpena News (http://bit.ly/1keRZBW ) says the state Department of Natural Resources is stocking about 130,000 of the fish this year, up from about 100,000 in 2013.

Most of the fish entered the Thunder Bay River in Alpena, while others are stocked in the Au Sable River in Oscoda and Lexington, .

Northern Lake Huron Fisheries supervisor Dave Borgeson says the Atlantic salmon differ from the Pacific variety because they are opportunistic feeders and are more adaptable to changes in Lake Huron's food environment.
