I-75 north reopens in Findlay after closing for almost 2 hours

Posted: Updated:
All lanes have been cleared and re-open after a six vehicle accident on I-75 in Findlay shut down northbound traffic for an hour and a half.

Troopers are not yet releasing the names of the victims, but one semi-truck driver is hospitalized with serious injuries.

Traffic was at a stand-still and backed up for miles on I-75 in Findlay just south of State Route 12 as emergency crews closed both lanes down to clear an accident involving two semi trucks, two pick-up trucks, and two passenger cars.

It happened just before 11:30 a.m.

Three people were injured.  Two of them were hospitalized.

Troopers say this crash happened within the stop-and-go traffic back-up created by another earlier accident a few miles north.

"These vehicles came up on that traffic and started stopping due to the congestion and a vehicle came up and collided with the other stopped traffic,” says Lt. John Altman with Findlay post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The gaper’s delay in the clear southbound lanes bothers Lt. Altman.

"Everybody wants to see oooh what happened. It's human nature,” says Lt. Altman. “But the problem we have is that people want to capture video of it now-a-days and you've got people driving and holding their cell phones up at the same time to capture video. Again, we're talking about distracted driving. Focus on what you're doing because exactly what happened in this crash was traffic was stopped and another vehicle ran into the other one."

At the rest stop south of Bowling Green, several northbound drivers are relieved.

"We finally got out of it and I made it to the rest stop,” says Madelaine Krolik from Ann Arbor.

They’re also hoping the people injured will be O.K.

"I feel very, very sorry for the people involved,” says Alice Kopas, who was parked in traffic on I-75 for an hour and a half in her car with her husband Jack.  “I said to Jack, we just have to thank God it wasn't us or someone we know and love."

No tickets have been issued yet.  State troopers are still working to determine who is at fault in the crash.
