Residents get results after asking 13ABC for help with demolished home debris

Posted: Updated:
A plan to demolish nuisance properties throughout Lucas County is almost complete. But some neighbors were concerned the  program wasn't moving quick enough.

13ABC's Christina Williams has the latest answers in this 13ABC follow-up.

The Lucas County Land Bank is working to demolish more than 800 homes, last week neighbors call 13ABC worried that the job wasn't getting done. Less than 24 hours after our story aired, we got answers.

"They got one completely cleaned up and the another partially cleaned up," says Dennis Love, who lives next to a demolished home.

Love lives on Dale Street in South Toledo. For more than a decade, he's worked to get an abandoned home next door torn down. The Lucas County Land Bank finally helped, but after demolishing three homes, crews left the rubble behind for weeks.

Neighbors called 13abc for help. Heather Anderson has lived next to a nuisance property for three years and was happy to see, it was finally being torn down but with a pile of debris left behind, her children's safety was the main concern.

"..Somebody is going to get hurt, " says Anderson.

One day later, 13ABC delivered action. This is what the property next to Heather Anderson's house looked like last week and here it is today.

The property still needs some work but if you live next to one of these homes, the Lucas County Land Bank has until the end of the month to complete demo, clear the area and plant grass seed.

It's part of 2-year grant funded project to knock down 850 nuisance homes. The goal is almost complete, but if the crews fail to complete the job, the grant doesn't cover the tab.

After seeing demo crews, neighbors are confident the program aimed at clearing out blight is just days away from turning a new leaf in their neighborhood.

"Fantastic, fantastic. As soon as it's all cleaned up I'm gonna have a big barbeque," says Love.
