Restaurant owner speaks out about E. coli safety

Posted: Updated:
The beef involved in a recent massive recall was only shipped to restaurants, not grocery stores. We asked one local restaurant what they does to ensure food safety. We went to Burger Bar on Heatherdowns, which is not involved in the investigation of the tainted beef in any way. But the recall has a lot of restaurants and some customers on high alert

The owner and chef of Burger Bar on Heatherdowns says he takes food safety seriously.  After all, his business depends on it. He says he got word early Monday morning that wolverine packing company a Detroit based meat producer recalled millions of pounds of beef after a safety inspection revealed the meat was contaminated with E coli bacteria. The beef was shipped to restaurants only. Burger Bar doesn't use the distributor, but the chef says he met with his staff to talk about the recall.

"Starting yesterday morning just how to handle and communicate with the guest who come in," said Tony House the owner of Burger Bar.

His customers aren't too worried about biting into a burger

"I mean personally I don't think about it all that much other than to be aware that its out there. I think the regulations out there are ok just the people monitoring them that need to do a better job to catch these certain outbreaks," said Dan Northrop a customer.

Chef house says he also made a few calls to make sure his product is safe.

"Along with the health department we called our suppliers as well just to check with them to make sure everything is clear on their end. again we don't use that particular supplier but its all about the communication," said House.

Health officials say you should make sure your beef is cooked to 160 degrees internal temperature that ensures bacteria is killed.
