Perrysburg gets resource officer

Posted: Updated:
Security is sharpening in suburban school districts and now Perrysburg is adding a school resource officer as another layer of protection at the high school.

Officer Mark Lepkowski is no stranger to the community. He's a Perrysburg grad and has served with the police department since 1995.

It's my 30 year reunion this year after graduating, and now I'm back in school so its definitely interesting to be back. But I enjoy it ...It's something I wanted to do it will be a nice change of pace."

A few weeks ago a Start High School resource officer recovered a loaded weapon from a student. Nothing like that has happened at Perrysburg, but Officer Lepowksi says that doesn't mean it won't. "It could happen anywhere, just because it hasn't doesn't mean it won't and it could very well be us."

He says he's working hard to understand his new beat, learning the lingo of high school students and so far has learned 20 new words. "The whole turnt thing...turnt up...that means they are getting wild...well it could mean they are getting drunk or turnt down is being sober."

He encourages parents to check out the urban dictionary to find out what their teens are talking about.

Students like Robert Smith says they feel safer. "We've had incidents from people coming in before and our football coach had to tackle them and now that we have an armed legitimate police officer ...That most of the students know ...Is a nice feeling."

The Junior High could also have police presence come fall as well.
